Before we go any further, a reminder of what FUN means in this series.
FUN is not about forced smiles, mandatory participation, or trying to make work something it isn’t. FUN is about creating workplaces where people are allowed to be human — where emotions are acknowledged, curiosity replaces assumptions, and connection is offered without pressure.
That’s why FUN stands for Feelings · Understanding · No Pressure.
And today, we return to Feelings.
It’s Okay to Have an Off Day
Not every day will be your best day.
Not every week will feel balanced.
And not every moment at work will be fueled by energy and optimism.
That’s normal.
FUN organizations understand that consistency matters more than constant positivity. People can be committed, capable, and professional — and still have days when they are quieter, slower, or simply worn down.
An off day is not a failure.
It’s part of being human.
Where Off Days Get Complicated
Off days become harder when they are:
- Questioned publicly
- Interpreted as disengagement
- Treated as something to fix
- Framed as a problem to overcome quickly
When people feel pressure to perform happiness, they spend more energy managing appearances than doing meaningful work.
FUN removes that pressure.
What FUN Looks Like with Off Days
In FUN organizations:
- Energy fluctuations are expected
- A quieter day does not trigger concern or commentary
- People are trusted to rebound without scrutiny
- Support shows up without spotlight
Sometimes FUN looks like laughter.
Sometimes FUN looks like space.
Both are valid.
The FUN Challenge: Feelings (Off Day Edition)
This month, normalize an off day — yours or someone else’s.
Try:
- Allowing a quieter presence without comment
- Responding with patience instead of curiosity
- Offering flexibility when possible
- Saying nothing at all when nothing is required
Then move on.
No diagnosing.
No follow-up check-ins unless invited.
No pressure to explain.
Why This Matters
People do not need permission to be perfect.
They need permission to be real.
When off days are accepted, trust deepens. And when trust deepens, FUN continues to exist — gently, consistently, and without expectation.
Coming Up Next in the FUN Series…
Next, we move to U = Understanding — and how curiosity can calm even the most tense workplace conversations.
