U = Curiosity Changes Conversations
Before we go any further, a reminder of what FUN means in this series.
FUN is not about forced smiles, mandatory participation, or trying to make work something it isn’t. FUN is about creating workplaces where people are allowed to be human — where emotions are acknowledged, curiosity replaces assumptions, and connection is offered without pressure.
That’s why FUN stands for Feelings · Understanding · No Pressure.
And today, we return to Understanding.
Curiosity Changes Conversations
When conversations get tense at work, the instinct is often to explain, defend, or correct.
Curiosity asks us to do something different.
Instead of reacting, curiosity pauses.
Instead of assuming, curiosity asks.
Instead of escalating, curiosity listens.
FUN organizations understand that curiosity is one of the most effective tools for maintaining professionalism and connection at the same time.
Why Curiosity Matters More Than Speed
In fast-moving environments, people often respond before they fully understand. That’s when tone sharpens, misunderstandings grow, and conversations drift off course.
Curiosity slows things just enough to:
- Clarify intent
- Surface context
- Reduce defensiveness
- Keep discussions productive
It is not passive.
It is purposeful.
What FUN Looks Like with Curiosity
In FUN organizations:
- Questions are asked without accusation
- Clarification is welcomed
- People feel safe explaining their thinking
- Conversations stay grounded even when emotions are present
Curiosity signals respect. And respect keeps conversations from becoming personal or reactive.
The FUN Challenge: Understanding (Curiosity Edition)
This month, practice leading with curiosity in one conversation that feels charged or unclear.
Try:
- “Can you help me understand your perspective?”
- “What’s driving that concern for you?”
- “What might I be missing here?”
Ask the question.
Listen fully.
Let the answer land before responding.
That pause is where change happens.
Why This Matters
Most people want to be understood before they want to be agreed with.
When curiosity becomes the default, conversations soften. When conversations soften, trust builds. And when trust builds, FUN has room to exist — even in difficult moments.
